Box hair color only uses one level of developer, which is usually strong, so when trying to
cover up your grays

In salon, your colorist has a wider choice of developers and knows the reasons when and why you would use a certain level.
The levels range from 5%, 6%, 9% and 12%, depending on the brand they use at your salon.
When thinking of the health of your hair the less developer used means healthier hair.
If your colorist can use a developer with a lower level, they will because your hair will be healthier in the long run.
A professional colorist would prefer to work with healthier hair then damaged hair.
Damages from Using Store Bought Products
Store bought hair color damages your hair cuticle in the long run, which can lead to an unwanted
hair cut!
It can also change the texture of your hair when the color is applied to existing colored hair.
The major factor is application, box color should only be applied to natural, uncolored hair, which is difficult to do on your own.
Therefore, going over all the hair can cause breakage from over processing the same sections.

Two Timing
For those of you that switch back and forth between the two, you have to stop! Because box color and professional
hair coloring vary so much, it is almost impossible for the colorist to predict what will happen to your hair.
It can create color bands leaving you with a constant stream of uneven hair color, resulting in either a color
correction (which can be costly) or a hair cut resulting in an undesirable style you then have to grow out. Also sometimes the chemical reaction can be quite a strong, resulting in unwanted hair color outcome.
Cost
Due to the results box hair color has on the condition of your hair, it can mean more regular hair cuts,
more after care products and conditioning treatments. In some cases a color correction would be needed
and that sometimes cannot be resolved in one visit to the salon which can be very costly.
